This adjustment in which the chiropractor pulls on your leg is called a long axis distraction adjustment. This adjustment is designed to gap the effected joint, in the direction the chiropractor pulls. If the chiropractor is performing this adjustment to the leg, they can adjust their hand contact to gap the femur from the acetabulum (ball and socket joint) of the pelvis, the knee joint, the ankle joints and even the low back! This can be a great way to encourage proper joint space and motion in the affected joints.
This adjustment is great for gapping joints and promoting healthy movement and space between the effected joints. By allowing the joint to gap, this will allow more nutrient flow to the joint, as well as take pressure off the surrounding nerves that may be compressed and pinched. Patients may have the feeling their joints being "compressed" or "jammed," and describe that right after the long axis distraction adjustment they feel an immediate difference. For lower back subluxations, this adjustment can be easier on the patient because you lay on your back instead of being twisted on your side.
