This is called an "Anterior Adjustment" or a "Bear Hug Adjustment." The adjustment got it's name because the chiropractors force is applied in a front to back fashion or in anatomical terms "anterior to posterior." The anterior adjustment also uses the patients weight to help generate the adjustment, opposed to adjusting the patient face down. This can often times be much more comfortable and easier for patients to fully relax while receiving the adjustment.
Chiropractors perform the bear hug adjustment most often to help restore extension (leaning backwards) into the thoracic spine. If the patient explains that they feel hunched over, often times from working at a desk or computer all day, they can start to notice more of a kyphosis (hump in their back) develop. This is where the bear hug adjustment will most often be utilized. Chiropractors can also use this adjustment to restore rotation into the thoracic spine, by placing their contact on either side of the spine, as well as correct rib subluxations.
The anterior adjustment is preferred by some patients because they describe it as being gentler and less forceful than being adjusted face down. The reason for this is because the chiropractor uses the patients weight to generate the adjustment, not just their own hands like the face down adjustments.
