Should you exercise with asthma?

How does chiropractic help with asthma?

The third thoracic vertebrae or T3, is the exit point for specific nerves that innervate the lungs and bronchioles. If this segment is lacking mobility or out of alignment, the nerve transmission can actually decrease to those areas, negatively affecting the bodies ability to breath, exacerbating current conditions such as COPD or asthma. Additionally, every time the lungs are filled with air and expanded with inhalation, your ribs, musculature and spine have to be able to move to allow the lungs to fully expand. (imagine trying to take a deep breath in with a corset on, it wouldn't work!) Chiropractic care helps regain that mobility in those structures, allowing full respiration. Patients will often notice a difference in breathing right after their first adjustment!

Cardiopulmonary exercise affect on asthma

Many people diagnosed with asthma have learned to fear exercise due to it triggering symptoms. A recent systematic review found on Cochrane Database analyzed several randomized trials and found that exercise can in fact improve heart and lung functioning.

They recommended regular exercise training such as running, gymnastics, cycling, swimming, weights, or walking. Each of these exercises were found to be well tolerated among study patients. Many patients found that while being fit, their symptoms in fact lessened in severity! Consistent exercise not only improves health-related quality of life but, as stated above, cardiopulmonary fitness. As most know cardiopulmonary exercise has a number of additional benefits to the body besides that of respiration. Cardio is great for joint health, circulation, mental clarity, stress and so much more! Therefor avoiding cardiopulmonary exercise due to fear of triggering symptoms related to asthma may be depriving the body in ways you may not be aware.

So what does this mean for you?

Fear avoidant behavior is very common for patients with respiration problems. Those with stable asthma should not fear but embrace regular exercise training within their capacity. And approach exercise without fear of exacerbation of symptoms, but rather improvement in overall health status.
