Whiplash Symptoms and Treatment
posted: Dec. 04, 2012.
What is Whiplash?
One of the most common consequences of injury to the neck is whiplash, or neck
strain/sprain. It is caused by extreme, sudden backwards (hyperextension) or
forwards (hyperflexion) motion of the neck, usually as a result of an auto accident
or other trauma such as a skiing fall or falling off a horse. Whiplash is composed of
many different symptoms that are the result of damage to the discs, the ligaments
of the spine, the nerve roots, the muscles of the neck and the joints between the
vertebrae (bones of the spine).
What are the symptoms of whiplash?
The symptoms of whiplash most often develop within the first 24-48 hours following
the accident, but often times can also come weeks to months after.
Symptoms may include:
- Neck pain and/or stiffness
- Head seems too heavy
- Blurred vision
- Shortness of breath
- Ringing in the ears
- Difficulty sleeping
- Numbness and tingling in the arms/legs
- Low back pain
- Pain between the shoulder blades
- Pain in the shoulder
- Trouble concentrating or focusing
Whiplash injury is one of the most common conditions resulting from auto
accidents. If you have been injured, either in an auto collision, or trauma resulting in whiplash, do
not hesitate to get treatment. Chiropractic care is essential in helping minimize the
signs and symptoms of a whiplash injury, it is especially important in minimizing lingering effects by restoring proper motion to the spine and promoting healthy healing.
If you’ve been injured in an auto accident, early treatment and diagnosis is key to
getting you back on track, doing your daily activities as quickly as possible.
