What is a Repetitive Stress injury and How To Treat Repetitive Stress Injury With Chiropractic Care

What is a Repetitive Stress Injury (RSI)?

Repetitive stress injuries are caused by performing the same or similar activities over and over again resulting in tissue damage and inflammation. The tendons around the joints connect muscle to bone, their collagen can be subject to breaking down because of the inability to keep up with the demands placed on them. Tissue's can undergo changes in texture to become fibrotic, they can even become adhesive with surrounding tissue which can be very painful and motion restricting. Other symptoms of repetitive stress injury can include numbness, tingling and burning. Over use resulting in injury can affect muscles, tendons and ligaments depending on the motion and the activity performed.

Tennis elbow, golfers elbow, bursitis, carpal tunnel syndrome are among the most common repetitive stress injuries.

Causes and Risk Factors of RSI's

One of the biggest risk factors can actually be your occupation. Long hours at a desk performing computer work can be a huge risk factor if not performed at an ergonomically correct position. Carpenters and construction workers are also commonly affected by RSI's because of the constant demand on their forearm flexors and extensors while using tools. Tennis elbow and golfers elbow can be caused from exactly what you'd think, tennis and golf. Both of these sports involve a high volume of force placed on the elbow joints, which can result in a repetitive stress injury.

The most common locations for repetitive stress injuries include the shoulders, neck, elbows and wrists, all of which chiropractors are trained to assess, adjust and provide rehabilitation exercises for. The doctors will also sit down with the patient and provide education on proper body ergonomics to avoid additional injury and to correct the cause of the repetitive stress injury.
