A healthy pregnancy is important for the life of a newborn; a healthy mom after pregnancy is just as important. A recently published journal article, reveals the risk of blood clots and their relation to Cesarian Section (C-section). Blood clots are associated with many health conditions including stroke, heart attack, pulmonary embolism and others; and, blood clots are not typically noticed unless they instigate a health condition.

The research showed that 3 in 1000 women that receive a C-section develop clots, that the risk of blood clots is about 4x higher in emergency C-section compared to natural child birth and 2x higher than natural child birth for elective C-section. Reason dictates that if we can increase the rates of natural child birth and reduce the rate of C-section we improve the odds of having a health mom after pregnancy.

One of the most common reasons for C-section is difficulty associated with breech birthing positions. It has been shown that chiropractic care, using the Webster Technique, has an 82% success rate at correcting the breech position. The eighth month of pregnancy is when chiropractic is most effective at helping the baby be in an ideal position for birth. Chiropractic offers proper alignment and reduced tension on ligaments, allowing the baby to shift into ideal birth positions and is worth considering even if it is days before the due date. Chiropractic is also well known to be effective for managing back and hip pain during pregnancy with few contraindications or side effects.  Making sure mom is well adjusted prior to giving birth may improve health outcomes.

Dr. Rachel Rising at Gallatin Valley Chiropractic has taken training in the Webster Technique and specializes in prenatal and postpartum chiropractic care for moms and newborn to young child chiropractic care.
