Reducing Postural Stress at Work

Neck and back pain are very common complaints among people that spend a lot of time in front of a computer or sitting at a desk.  This type of work often puts a person in a postural position of forward head carriage, which is known to contribute to headaches, neck pain, back pain and shoulder pain.  Sitting is a position that is known to contribute to poor posture and puts a significant load on the discs in the low back, potentially contributing to sciatica. Using a keyboard or mouse with the wrists in an extended position can compromise the carpal tunnel and leg position can contribute to circulatory issues.

At Gallatin Valley Chiropractic, the doctors can provided postural screening and assessment. Following an exam, they can provide care that is tailored to your specific needs that include stretches and exercises to improve posture and muscle imbalances.  They may recommend modifying your work environment to reduce postural stresses.

Bringing your screen to (or slightly above) eye level helps reduce tension in the neck and upper back; your screen should be at or slightly above eye level, helping to encourage a position where the head is over the shoulders and not in front. Having the arms at the side with the elbows flexed to 90 degrees, the wrists in a neutral position, the thighs level or just below and the feet flat on the floor will be the most healthy seated position.

Finding a way to avoid sitting for many hours on end may help prevent or relieve back pain and/or sciatica symptoms. A sit-to-stand desk may help with postural strains in the work area. There are several models on the market that can be purchased or a person can build their own standing desk. DIY Projects with Pete has free plans and guidance to build your own standing desk.  You'll also find a coupon to save money on the adjustable electronic base.

If you are in pain, could use chiropractic care, postural screening or advice, or would like to discuss work place modifications to help you with symptoms you may be experiencing, give the doctors at Gallatin Valley Chiropractic a call.
