Chiropractic as Cancer Treatment?

Chiropractic as Cancer Treatment?

Chiropractic is neither a cure nor a treatment for cancer...and, there is no research that shows that it reduces the risks for cancer.  So, why would we use the words chiropractic and cancer in the same sentence?

Chiropractic care is an effective secondary treatment for cancer patients. According to the Seminars in Oncology Nursing 2005 (AUG): 184-189, "Chiropractic is one of the leading alternatives to standard medical treatment for cancer pain management."  Chiropractic is the leading branch of health care that uses no drugs to address pain. Many cancer patients, due to their condition or potential drug interactions, are not able to manage pain; chiropractic is a wonderful option to help relieve pain, improve function and enhance quality of life.

Many cancer patients suffer pain, headaches and gait changes due to their condition.  The effects of radiation and chemotherapy on normal tissue leads to tissue fibrosis.  Fibrosis leads to loss of mobility and painful movement due to joint contracture and adhesion; these are the secondary conditions that chiropractic is very effective at addressing.

Many types of cancer are related to the bones and fragility is associated with some types of cancer. While chiropractic is typically associated with a high velocity low amplitude thrust adjustments, doctors of chiropractic can tailor care to be very low force, they can help with stretching and mobility exercises and other treatment modalities that can have a profound impact on pain, function and quality of life.

While addressing alignment and body motion, chiropractic care can have a significant influence on the nervous system, which in turn can influence any and all body systems.  By improving neurological conduction, chiropractors may help to lay a foundation for faster and more effective healing.
