Middle Back Pain

The middle back is comprised of 12 thoracic vertebrae and 24 ribs. In between the vertebrae are discs that act as shock absorbers. Mid back pain is a very common complaint from our patients at Gallatin Valley Chiropractic, but one that patients typically get great relief with care.

Causes of Mid Back Pain

Middle back pain can range from dull ache discomfort to a sharp abrupt pain. Ribs typically have more of a sharp, abrupt discomfort that can be brought on with deep breathing, twisting or coughing. There are specific tests the doctors at Gallatin Valley Chiropractic can perform to determine the exact cause of the pain.

  • Rib subluxation
    • Ribs attach onto the thoracic vertebrae, can get dislodged out of place and "stuck"
  • Joint dysfunction
    • If a joint is lacking proper movement, the muscles around the area will protect and inflammation will settle in
  • Poor posture
    • Poor posture resulting in excess compression and strain in the middle back
  • Prolonged sitting
    • Sedentary lifestyles decrease circulation and joints over time become more rigid
  • Muscle hypertonicity
    • Namely the thoracic paraspinals and the rhomboids

Treatment for Mid Back Pain

Chiropractic care is performed to correct joint misalignment and restrictions. Being adjusted is the most common treatment for middle back pain as it allows for quick and long lasting pain relief. Our doctors will also take the time to go over exercises and ways to prevent the mid back pain from continuing.
