Scoliosis

Scoliosis is an “S” or “C” shape sideways curvature in the spine which can cause stiffness and pain. Scoliosis is generally found in the thoracic or lumbar regions of the spine which ranges from being hardly noticeable to causing major deformity. Individuals that have scoliosis may have been born with the condition (Congenital) or it can be formed over time (idiopathic). Females more commonly develop scoliosis, usually during early childhood unless it is caused by a degenerative disease.

If your shoulders are not equal when standing normal, one shoulder blade is more prominent than the other, clothes do not seem to hang off you properly you may suffer from scoliosis. With these symptoms back pain usually occurs but is not always constant. This abnormal spine formation can be caused by carrying a heavy bag or purse on one shoulder, a physically traumatic event, osteoporosis, or over development of an extremity due to a sport activity (pitchers, javelin throwers, etc.)

Besides staying active and healthy, individuals with scoliosis can help monitor their condition by making changes to their overall lifestyle. Our Chiropractor in Bozeman, MT use non-invasive techniques to alleviate the pain and restore motion. If a case is severe enough a brace can be worn to control the curve from worsening. Surgery is only needed in the most severe cases with a curve typically greater than 60 degrees.
